A new cancer support centre is set to open in Enniskillen.

The Cancer Focus NI Therapeutic Support Centre is part of the charity's five-year strategy to open centres across Northern Ireland.

The centre will be based at 18 High Street.

At a meeting on September 4, business leaders, community, and health professionals gathered at Enniskillen Castle to learn about the centre and the charity's vision.

The Duke of Abercorn, patron of Cancer Focus NI, spoke about the charity's commitment to Northern Ireland.

Councillor John McClaughry, chair of Fermanagh and Omagh District Council, described the centre as a "valuable resource for local residents".

Boyd Carson, chair of Cancer Focus NI, said: "Last year, our charity launched an ambitious five-year strategy that will see Cancer Focus NI open Therapeutic Cancer Support Centres in towns and cities across Northern Ireland."

Richard Spratt, chief executive at Cancer Focus NI, said: “Every day in the Western Trust, another 6 people are told “You have cancer”.

"This is one of the most devastating moments anyone can experience, either for themselves or for someone they love."

The charity has already opened a retail shop with an onsite counselling room in Enniskillen, appointed a health improvement officer and fundraising officer, and developed partnerships with local charities, including the Palliative Transport Service as well as the appointment of a local architect and contractor for the design and build of the Support Centre.

Noelle McAloon, BID manager, said: “The scoping exercise undertaken by Cancer Focus NI to support the decision to bring this Centre to Enniskillen highlights the stark reality that the Fermanagh area is the most under provided for region in Northern Ireland in terms of third-sector cancer care and support."
