Billy Nicholl, a Fermanagh man who helped support grieving families through charity work, has died.

Mr. Nicholl was highly-regarded in the county and beyond for his charity work for bereaved families alongside his wife, Ciara.

Together they co-founded Ellie's Retreat - a charity that offers respite breaks for families who have suffered the loss of a child.

They named the retreat in honour of their daughter, Ellie, who died in 2016 when she was eight following a lifelong battle with  H-ABC Syndrome.

In a statement on social media, a spokesperson for Ellie's Retreat said: "It is with heavy hearts that we announce the sudden yet peaceful passing of Billy; devoted husband, loving father, and rock to his family and friends.

"Billy worked tirelessly on Ellie’s Retreat and was well known for traversing the country (tramping the roads) with Ciara, raising funds and awareness for the retreat they set up in his darling princess, Ellie’s memory.

"Helping others was in his DNA; [he was] a man of humour as well as considered advice and support. Everyone who knew him will feel his loss deeply.

"Ciara and [their son] Arran are already drawing comfort from your messages at this time and though they may remain unanswered, please do know your support is very much appreciated."

Mr. Nicholl's Funeral Mass will take place on Saturday, September 21 at 11am in St. Joseph's Church, Cradien, Enniskillen, followed by burial in Cross Cemetery, Enniskillen.

He is survived by his wife, Ciara and son, Arran, and a wide circle of family and friends.

Mr. Nicholl was pre-deceased by his daughter, Ellie; his parents, Billy and Margaret; and his siblings, Robert and Heather.
