A motorcyclist who was killed in what police are treating as a hit-and-run collision has been remembered as “a gentleman, a teacher, and a mentor...a true professional and a man of huge integrity".

Those were the words of Northern Ireland’s chief firefighter Aidan Jennings, speaking about the life and legacy of Richard Maze, a former fire officer who served throughout the Troubles.

Mr. Maze, from Lisburn, passed away in the crash on the Boa Island Road on Thursday, September 19.

A 70-year-old man has been charged with causing death by dangerous driving, failing to remain where accident occurred causing injury, failing to report an accident whereby injury was caused and failing to stop where the accident occurred causing injury.

He is due to appear at Enniskillen Magistrates Court on Monday, October 14.

Speaking at the funeral service at Seymour Street Methodist Church in Lisburn, Mr. Jennings said: "(Richard Maze) is a man who, for me, defined what it is to be considered a gentleman.

"Richard was also part of our family – the NI Fire and Rescue Service family – and he'll long be remembered by us and his legacy will be cherished,”

Mr. Jennings added: "I can say without fear of contradiction, that Richard left a legacy: he made a difference."
