The P1 classroom in Ballinamallard Primary School is a kaleidoscope of colour and a hub of activity.

Children busy themselves around the room, squashing playdough in their hands, colouring in beautiful bright pictures, and working in a kitchenette, with one child even making The Impartial Reporter breakfast.

Jacob and Isla Grace are in the hot seat first and Jacob has a few burning questions for the reporter and photographer.

Jacob to John McVitty (McV): How old are you? My granda is an old man, he is 54. Are you 64?”

McV: No!

VJ: What do you do for fun?

Jacob: I watch Kids YouTube, this is my favourite. It's called Mickey and JJ. There is some monsters, there is always a monster so there is different kinds and it can be a massive spirit, or do you know what it can be a giant spider - you know how they kill it, is a massive sucker, its a type of gun and it sucks up every monster.

VJ: Is it good?

Jacob:  “I’ll tell you how much hours it is ... 99 million hours.

VJ: What do you for fun, Isla Grace?

Ina Grace: My daddy plays with me all day, 

VJ: What do you play?

Ina- Grace: Chess

VJ: Is Chess hard?

Ina Grace [Shakes head]: No

VJ: I hear you like farming, What do you like about farming?

Ina Grace: Milking.

VJ: What would you like for Christmas?

Jacob: I want to get a Nintendo switch and a tablet for Christmas, I am going to play Roblox on my tablet. Do you know what Roblox is?

VJ: I have heard of it, yes.

Jacob: What age are you?

VJ: What age do you think I am

Jacob: 21

VJ: I am 26

Jacob My dad is 26, but my uncle is one thousand.

The next pair to face some tough questions are Brodie and Grace. Both are excited to be in P1 and both are full of chat.

VJ: Do you like school?

Brodie: I like playing outside, we build blocks outside, I built a tower.

Grace: I like the kitchen.

VJ: what do you like about playing in the kitchen.

Grace: Making coffee.

VJ: Do you drink coffee?

Grace: No, I drink baby cappuccinos.

VJ: Where do you get them?

Grace: Marks and Spencer’s. Mummy can make her own cappuccino and she can make me a baby cappuccino.

VJ: Do you like going for coffee with mummy?

Grace: Yes.

Brodie: I like playing in the house outside.

VJ: Do you watch cartoons?

Brodie: I like watching batman on the TV.

Grace: I like watching minions, they are so funny.

VJ: What do the minions say?

Grace: They talk to themselves or their friends. Some of them are longer and some of their hands are so so long like a ladder and they can get the other minions down.

VJ: Are you looking forward to Halloween?

Grace: I am excited about Halloween because I am going to England.

Brodie: Same.

VJ: Are you going on holiday too?

Brodie: I already been.

VJ: Where?

Brodie: Spain. We would dunk in the pool. I splashed mum and dad and my brothers.

Maisie and Jesse were keen to talk about a number of things including activities in the classroom and the very important topic of food - and who burnt the dinner! 

Maisie: “I was painting house, I like painting because I can make paintings of everything.

VJ: What’s your favourite thing you have painted?

Maisie: A unicorn and a rainbow.

VJ: Wow, did that take a lot of work?

Maisie: Oh yeah, it was rainbow coloured and unicorn coloured.

Jesse: I was in the kitchen and squeezing some orange juice in the cup

VJ: Do you help make breakfast at home?

Jesse: Yes, I make porridge.

Maisie: When my mummy is making the dinner, she lets me stir the dinner.

VJ: Does mummy make nice dinner?

Maisie: Yes, but last night my daddy came home and he burned his food ... his garlic bread, he put it in the bin and got a new one.

Jesse: Sometimes I just play outside. I like TV.

VJ: What do you watch on TV?

Jesse: Tractor stuff.

VJ: Jesse, tell me, what is the best tractor?

Jesse [with no hesitation]: Lamborghini

VJ: Why?

Jesse: Because it has a bull sign on it ... we have a real one at home.

Next up are Gracie and Naomi who are keen to talk about lots of things, especially holidays and toys.

 VJ: Do you like school?

Gracie: Yes, I like playdough.

Naomi: “I like to play at home, I play with my mummy.

VJ: What do you play?

 Naomi: Everything that’s in my bedroom ... I got a new bed.

VJ: Is it a big bed?

Naomi: It’s this way; I sleep at the top and there is a play area at the bottom

VJ: It’s a bunk bed?

Naomi: I sleep in it at the top.

VJ: Are you scared of falling out?

Naomi: There is a wee thing here to keep me safe.

VJ: Do you like animals?

Naomi: I have a cat who is pink.

VJ: A pink cat?

Naomi: It is not a real cat, it’s a teddy!

Gracie: I have two bunnies.

VJ: Are they real bunnies or teddy bunnies?

Gracie: Teddy bunnies

VJ: What are they called?

Gracie: One is called Peter Rabbit.

Naomi: I have a daddy rabbit, a mummy rabbit and a baby rabbit. I call the big one Peter Rabbit and the mummy one is called Lily Bob Tail and the little one is Benjamin Bunny.

VJ: Do you do anything at home?

Gracie: I play outside, I have a trampoline.

VJ: Do you jump high?

Naomi: I once went on the trampoline with my mummy and I bounced this high. 

VJ: What about Santa? It is not long until Christmas.

Naomi: In winter I am going to Finland.

VJ: Are you going on holiday, Gracie?

Gracie: I don’t remember the name but I stayed there for seven nights. I got a older sister and she went down the slide and it got a bit scared down the slide

VJ: Did you scream?

Gracie: Our daddy catched our older sister.

Meanwhile, inside the classroom, tidy-up time is beginning.

Naomi: It is tidy-up time now.

VJ: Do you like tidy-up time?

Gracie: I like it

Naomi: I like it but I will stay here with you.

VJ: Who is the best teacher?

Both: Miss Morrison

VJ: Is she funny and kind?

Gracie: Yes.

Naomi: I love her.

Next up in Rhianon who sat beside Miss Morrison.

VJ: Have you been on holiday?

Rhianon: Portugal.

VJ: Did you swim in the pool ... did you splash?

Rhianon: Yes, my nana and pappy brought me there.

VJ: Are they fun?

Rhianon: They bring me ice lollies.

VJ: What is your favourite type of ice lollies?

Rhianon: Chocolate ones ... they are really good.

VJ: Is it too cold for ice cream?

Rhianon: My brain is strong for ice cream.

VJ: Do you get brain freeze?

Rhiannon: No.

VJ: Tell me about your favourite teddy?

Rhiannon: I have a whole load at nana’s house, I have loads.

VJ: Which is your favourite?

Rhiannon: The pink ones.

VJ: What do you like about school?

Rhiannon: Colouring in.

VJ: What do you colour in?

Rhiannon: Elephants.
