On Tuesday, October 8, almost 30 pupils from the Speech and Language classes in Holy Trinity PS and Enniskillen Model PS came together to celebrate the upcoming Developmental Language Disorder (DLD) Day (this Friday, October 18).
Now in its seventh year, this day is celebrated annually around the world with more than 40 countries becoming involved.
DLD is a hidden but common disability that affects one in 14 people which, for unknown reasons, causes difficulties in understanding and using language.
The 2024 DLD Day theme is, ‘Speak up for DLD’.
The Enniskillen pupils – who come from all across Fermanagh – came together in the Model PS that morning to play together and spend time interacting and ‘speaking up’.
The pupils all had the opportunity to introduce themselves to Councillor John McClaughry, UUP, the Chairman of Fermanagh and Omagh District Council, as well as singing a song to him.
Their recording of this song will be incorporated into a United Kingdom-wide video celebrating DLD.
Also this Friday, Enniskillen Castle, along with other key buildings throughout the United Kingdom, will be lit up in purple to mark the occasion.
