A LOCAL MLA has invited Andrew Muir, the Minister responsible for rural communities, to meet with rural support groups and address concerns over tackling rural poverty and social isolation.

Colm Gildernew, MLA for Fermanagh and South Tyrone, extended the invitation to Muir, noting that he would host rural support networks at Stormont on November 11.

He also asked what steps Muir would take to engage local communities and stakeholders to ensure that future financial support is targeted effectively to those most in need.

In response, Muir emphasized the importance of consultation and engagement in shaping future rural affairs policies.

"It is absolutely key that we do that consultation and engagement so that whatever we do going forward is fit for purpose," he said, noting that he plans to meet with officials next week before entering a co-design process with rural community development practitioners.

Muir expressed his commitment to working closely with local communities, stating, "It is absolutely key not only that we do that and target it to those most in need but that we shape the future policy direction in conjunction with local communities."

When asked by MLA Justin McNulty if there were plans to impose cuts to schemes aimed at tackling rural poverty and social isolation (TRPSI), Muir assured that he was advocating for further funding. "I am lobbying hard on behalf of rural communities for the support that they need," he said, while acknowledging the current financial challenges.

The Minister’s comments reflect the growing concern over the future of funding for rural communities, as stakeholders push for clarity and sustained support amid tightening budgets.
