THE family of murdered police officer Stephen Carroll are being "psychologically tortured" by a poster calling for the release of his killers, a victims advocate has said.
Kenny Donaldson, Director of the South East Fermanagh Foundation (SEFF), was speaking after a poster appeared in Newtownbutler demanding the release of Brendan McConville and John Paul Wootton, who were convicted and sentenced in 2012 for the murder of Con. Carroll in 2009.
Mr. Donaldson said there has been a "complete lack of respect" for his family.
"The Carroll family have been involved with SEFF for many years and there is a complete lack of respect being shown to them," he said.
"They are being psychologically tortured by those who believe that the murder of a Police Officer is legitimate and should be without consequence for the perpetrators.
“The reality is that there were others involved in the operation that saw Con. Carroll murdered and there are people who continue to conceal their identity.
"We call again today for all involved in that heinous murder to be brought to justice, their place is behind bars with those already convicted."
Mr. Donaldson continued: “This poster erected in the centre of Newtownbutler must be removed and we call upon the applicable public authority to do so.
“Newtownbutler and South East Fermanagh knows all too well the scourge of terrorism where many innocents were slaughtered in the area by principally Irish Republican terrorists."
DUP MLA Deborah Erskine said the poster is "deeply disturbing".
“First and foremost, my thoughts are with the family and loved ones of Constable Stephen Carroll," Mrs. Erskine said.
"This deeply disturbing poster, along with its appalling campaign for ‘justice’ for those convicted of his murder, only adds to the trauma felt by those who have already endured so much.
"I would urge the people of Newtownbutler to come together to remove this poster, recognising the distress and offence it causes to our community and the unacceptable attempt to justify the actions of terrorists.
"Should this not be addressed by the local community, I call on the relevant authorities—whether the PSNI, Department for Infrastructure or the local council to act swiftly to take it down.
"Justice is being served on Brendan McConville and John Paul Wootton. Behind bars is where they belong."
