JACK Evans, an outstanding Joinery apprentice from South West College (SWC), has been honoured with a top award.

Jack, from Aughnacloy, recently received the Trainee/Apprenticeship Learner of the Year award at the prestigious OCN NI Learning Endeavour Awards 2024.

The awards ceremony took place at the Titanic Exhibition Centre in Belfast, celebrating the remarkable achievements of learners from across Northern Ireland.

The OCN NI Learning Endeavour Awards, now in their sixth year, recognise the extraordinary dedication and achievements of learners, teachers, and tutors.

In a gathering of more than 350 attendees, including learners, educators, and distinguished guests, the awards highlighted the exceptional progress and accomplishments of individuals who have navigated significant personal challenges to excel in their education.

A total of £16,000 in learning bursaries was awarded to both learners and providers across the province, including SWC apprentice Jack, who completed his Level 2 Joinery, advancing to Level 3 Joinery, as an apprentice.

Jack’s achievements in this new award category for 2024, Traineeship/Apprenticeship Learner of the Year, were recognised with a Highly-Commended accolade, sharing the honour with fellow nominee, Tom Brett.

Reflecting on his achievement, Jack credits his success to the opportunity to combine earning with learning.

He believes an apprenticeship is the best path forward and says he has thrived under the "earn and learn" model.

Discussing his journey, he continued: “I was eager to attend college after school to pursue a trade, choosing joinery because of the practical approach and my keen interest.

“I have thoroughly enjoyed college life, meeting new friends, and applying the skills I learn on site.

“Being out on site has really helped me develop - I observe what others are doing and pick up new skills. This approach suits me well, and I’d encourage others to consider it too."

Commenting on Jack’s success, Vanessa O’Keeffe, Deputy Head of Department at SWC, said: "We are incredibly proud of Jack’s achievements.

"His hard work and dedication have set a high standard for all our learners, showcasing his exceptional skills and the unwavering support from our staff and his employer through the apprenticeship pathway at the college.

"Receiving the Highly-Commended - Trainee/Apprenticeship Learner of the Year award is a true reflection of his commitment and perseverance.

"Congratulations to Jack on this well-deserved recognition!"
