Mount Lourdes Grammar School recently held an annual ceremony to celebrate the exceptional achievements of its students, marking a year of academic success, personal growth, and holistic development.

Principal Sinead Cullen praised the students for their dedication and resilience, sharing that: "In Mount Lourdes, it is our vision that each of our young people will reach their full potential. As we nurture their holistic development, we want our students to become successful learners and confident individuals who will make a positive contribution to the school and wider community.”

This past year has seen the return of formal examinations without any exam board mitigations, making the school’s exam results even more remarkable.

Mount Lourdes students excelled, with GCSE results 6 per cent above the Northern Ireland grammar school average. An impressive 56 per cent of grades were A* or A, while 80 per cent were within the A*-B range.

At A-Level, the success continued with 94 per cent of grades were A*-C, with 25 students achieving an A grade or higher in all three subjects.

"Our students have set high standards for themselves and worked tirelessly to achieve them," Mrs. Cullen added.

“Their skills and knowledge will serve as the foundation for future endeavours.”

But academic results are only part of the story. Mount Lourdes has supported students’ wider development through an array of extracurricular activities and initiatives, designed to nurture both talent and resilience.

The school introduced new subjects at GCSE, expanded its careers programme, and facilitated career insights through alumni talks, conventions, and workshops.

“Our students have excelled academically but have also participated in a wide range of extracurricular activities,” Mrs. Cullen noted.

“These successes are supported by our Pastoral Care and Student Welfare provision, which builds resilience to support students throughout their educational journey.”

The school’s first-ever history tour to Washington, D.C. in February 2024 was a highlight of the year, with students visiting landmarks and even enjoying a personalised tour of the White House. Locally, students participated in diverse competitions, such as the UK Chemistry Olympiad and local feis events, showcasing skills in academic and cultural arenas.

Beyond academics, the school emphasised the importance of personal growth and community involvement. Students attended events with notable guests like Dr. Catherine Mann from the Bank of England, Consul General James Applegate, and MLA Naomi Long, gaining insights into business and politics.

Community partnerships also flourished, with sustainability projects and leadership programmes supported by Mannok and other local organisations.

Mount Lourdes’ dedication to sports and the arts was equally evident.

From winning the Northern Ireland Shield in Minor Netball to securing the All-Ireland Championship in Minor Cross Country, students have shone across disciplines.

“These are tremendous achievements and are testimony to the commitment of the team, parents, and staff who work alongside the students,” Mrs. Cullen remarked.

As the ceremony concluded, Mrs. Cullen expressed gratitude to parents, staff, and the wider community for their unwavering support, acknowledging that their commitment has been integral to students’ success.

She left students with a powerful message for the future, quoting Nelson Mandela: “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.”

Reflecting on a year of remarkable achievements, Mount Lourdes continues to prepare its students to become compassionate and capable leaders, eager to make a positive impact on their communities and beyond.
