Fermanagh and Omagh District Council's vice chairwoman, Councillor Elaine Brough, welcomed the Fermanagh Senior Hurling Team to a celebration at Enniskillen Town Hall after they won the Lory Meagher Cup 2024.

This marks the third title for Fermanagh, making them one of the "most successful counties in the competition"', which began in 2009.

The team began their Lory Meagher campaign on April 13, 2024, against Leitrim in Round One, securing a seven-point win.

Round Two saw the team face Cavan, with the match ending in a draw.

By April 28, 2024, the team had defeated Warwickshire by 26 points in Round Three.

The next match was against Lancashire which the Fermanagh Senior Hurling Team won by six points.

Finally, they met Longford on May 18, 2024, in their last group match.

The team's 'strong performances' in the group matches earned them a place in the final where they once again met Longford.

Both teams "started strong", but Fermanagh was first on the scoreboard, scoring after just 40 seconds.

Despite a disallowed goal, the team maintained their momentum, eventually claiming the title with a score of 3-22 to 2-20.

Councillor Brough commended the team for demonstrating high levels of "skill, communication, team spirit, and resilience".

She also expressed gratitude to the manager, Joe Baldwin, and the backroom team for their dedication in preparing the players for each game.

She said: "I commend each and every player for the skills you demonstrated on the pitch to win the Lory Meagher Cup but also on your commitment to training.

"Being successful as a sports team requires hours of training and this can be challenging as you have work, family and personal commitments as well."

Councillor Brough congratulated the team on behalf of the Fermanagh and Omagh District Council, praising them for making their family, friends, clubs, county, and district proud.

She added: "I am confident that you will be an inspiration to the next generation of hurling players in Fermanagh."

The community will now be watching closely as the team prepares for the challenges of the Nicky Rackard Cup.
