Economy Tom Elliott: Farmers and their invaluable sector are just not being supported enough It is vital that agriculture does not slip down the DAERA priority list. There are more than 24,000 farm businesses in Northern Ireland, employing more than 50,000 people. They should at least have equal priority to other aspects of the Minister’s portfolio. Environment Ministers endorse the latest farm safety action plan The latest Farm Safety Partnership Action Plan has been endorsed by Department for the Economy Minister Conor Murphy, and Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs (DAERA) Minister Andrew Muir. The three-year plan is aimed at making farms safer and helping to save lives. Clogher Valley Show Youth awards and presentations to charity at Clogher Valley Show Following a highly-successful Clogher Valley Show at the end of July, the organisers held an evening of presentations of awards and cheques to charity. The nominated charity this year was ACE First Responders, a charity formed for the Augher, Clogher and Eskra areas. Fivemiletown Grassland Club visits noted Angus herd during a summer farm walk Fermanagh Grassland Club’s summer farm walk was an interesting and informative event hosted by Ian Browne at Cavanaleck, Fivemiletown. Ian – who is well known to many farmers from his former role with DAERA, mostly in Countryside Management – took the opportunity to return home to farm where he established a pedigree Aberdeen Angus herd and also constructed a number of poultry houses. Education Win a beef and lamb hamper with Meat4Schools POST-primary schools across Northern Ireland could be in with a chance to win a hamper packed full of Northern Ireland Farm Quality Assured (NIFQA) beef and lamb, with the return of the Livestock and Meat Commission’s (LMC) Meat4Schools competition. Now open for entries, the competition – sponsored by ABP Linden – encourages students to get creative in the production of a short, one-minute video on the entry topic relevant to their key stage.
