After a very successful Mixed Pairs tournament in St. Macartin’s Cathedral Hall, Drum pair Stanley and Linda Carleton emerged as winners of the coveted Cathedral Cups.
Eight pairs returned to contest the finals night out of 99 entries over the three qualifying nights.
In round one, S. Carleton 7 D. Kerr 4, G. Hurst 11 M. Hurst 1, T. Vance 6 A. Wray 5, B. Donnelly 11 I. Bleakley 2. Semifinals: S. Carleton 6 B. Donnelly 2, G. Hurst 8 T. Vance 4. In the final between Stanley and Linda Carleton and George Hurse and Nora Robinson the scores were close up to the fourth end at three shots to two for Stanley, in the fifth end Stanley picked up a four to lead by five shots and a further one in the sixth to go ahead by six shots. George got three shots in the next two ends and lost one in the last to leave Stanley and Linda the worthy winners by nine shots to five.
At the conclusion of play, tournament organiser and chairman Gerry Vennard thanked all the competitors who entered the tournament, also the ladies for the welcome cuppa each night and the club members who helped with the tournament. Prizes were then presented by Club Captains Violet Vennard and Davy Jackson.
