Lee Johnston netted four race wins as he dominated the Supersport events on road racings return at Oliver’s Mount in Scarborough.
The Maguiresbridge rider was unchallenged all weekend at the Barry Sheene Classic meeting as he completed a quadruple on board his Ashcourt Racing Yamaha R6.
“It all went well,” acknowledged Lee. “There was only one race that we didn’t lead from start to finish, so it was all pretty plain sailing to be honest.”
The first Supersport A race saw Lee qualify on pole position, and he raced clear from the rest of the field into the first corner and was never headed. He had soon established a three second lead over Dom Herbertson and he was able to manage the gap, eventually taking the chequered flag two seconds clear.
The second race followed a similar pattern, with Johnston again racing ahead from pole position.
With four laps of the scheduled six completed he again led by three seconds and was awarded the race win when the red flags came out to call a premature end to the race.
The third and fourth Supersport races also yielded wins for Johnston, although his third outing was the most dramatic of his wins.
“The third race was a bit weird,” Lee revealed. “A deer ran across the track right in front of me 10 metres away. It scared the life out of me! Then the race got stopped and had to start off again. This time there was a crash behind me into turn one and only the first couple got through, which was me and the guy leading.
“I looked around and saw bikes everywhere and thought that it was going to be red flagged so I didn’t set off at the pace I normally would. By this stage he probably had a two or three second lead and then I thought maybe they aren’t red flagging at all, and it took me a corner or two to get back into gear.
“Just as I caught him up, he had a mechanical problem and had to pull over, so I didn’t get to pass anybody at any point all weekend!
The Oliver’s Mount event was Lee’s second race outing in quick succession, having contested the British Supersport race at Donnington Park where he finished eleventh in race one, and his busy schedule continues this weekend.
“We are back to the British Championship this weekend at Snetterton,” he revealed. “Then we have a weekend off and then it is Silverstone and then back to the Gold Cup after that. We have a busy month or two after having a lot of time off.”
