Name: Eve Callaghan
Sport: Tennis
How did you become involved in your sport?
When I watched Andy Murray win his first Wimbledon title, I decided to try out tennis just for fun when I was nine. The following year I started weekly training at Enniskillen Tennis Club.
What is it that you love about your sport?
What I love most about tennis is that you’ve never lost the match until the last point. It’s never too late to comeback and win. I also love the lasting friendships I have made off court from all over Ireland.
What are you earliest sporting memories?
I first got into sport competing for my primary school’s netball and cross country.
Who was, or is, your biggest influence?
Both Matthew and Louise McGann who have both coached me during my time at Enniskillen Tennis Club have been very influential and inspirational.
Who do you look up to in your chosen sport?
I look up to Ashleigh Barty, an Australian tennis player, who proves that you can still be world no. 1 with a different game style to most.
I am also inspired by Coco Gauff who isn’t intimidated by any of the more experienced players.
Could you give us an example of what a typical week involves for yourself?
Before the closure of tennis courts nationwide, I was training six days a week at Enniskillen Tennis Club including group sessions, one-to-one coaching and practice matches.
Alongside hitting practice, I workout daily to improve my agility and strength. I also enjoy running which helps my stamina.
What do you think is the key to being successful in sport?
Commitment is a huge part of success. In all weather you must give your best at every training session. Since tennis is mental game, it’s important to respect your competitors, trust your coaches and believe in yourself.
What has been your biggest successes to date?
My successes are ranking in the top 10 in Ireland in Girls Singles Under 14 and finishing in the top 4 at the National Matchplays. Another of my greatest achievements would be being selected for Ulster for the fourth time last year.
What are your goals for the future?
My ultimate goal is to win the Irish Junior Championships at Fitzwilliam Lawn Tennis Club.
What bit of advice would you offer to anybody starting out in your chosen sport?
Trust in the process, aim high and never give up.
