With tennis competitions returning after a long hiatus Enniskillen juniors have been quick off the mark.
It is Eve Callaghans first year in the under 18 category. She started off with one of the country’s biggest tournaments held in Lansdowne, Dublin. Eve played great tennis and made her way to the semi final where she met the eventual tournament winner Juliette O’Hanlon. It was a thrilling three set match with Eve just losing out in a championship tie break.
This tournament really set Eve up to go one step further in her next tournament, the Belfast junior hardcourt championships.
Eve again progressed to the semi finals where she met number 1 seed Ciara Hill. There was no stopping Eve this time and she won the match with a convincing score line 6/0 6/2. Despite playing well in the final Eve lost but gained a confidence boost for her next tournament.
Last week was Ulster’s biggest junior tournament of the year at Belfast Boat Club. Players travel from all over the country to compete at this event. Eve picked up another level in this tournament and made it to the top group of three playing for top positions. Eve played an unbelievable match and won against Louise O’Callaghan a top competitor from Munster but lost her second match in a thrilling three set battle. As It was a round Robin group, ironically the title went to the girl Eve beat and Eve took the runners up position.
For Eve’s first year under 18 she is doing incredibly well and will be competing next week at Ireland’s biggest junior tournament in Dublin.
Club mate Sam Morrison has also had a great start to his season in the under 14s.
Sam played a couple of tournaments before the Belfast Boat Club but he brought his best tennis to this tournament. He was playing in the junior tour 250 event. The competition was strong and Sam met fellow club player Jonah Balfour in the first round. Both boys played great tennis but it was Sam who progressed to the next round. but Sam played his best tennis at this tournament and won all his matches in straight sets to take the title.
Enniskillen’s youngest competitor so far this year is Grace Hutchings.
Grace played her first tournament in the under 8 event at the Belfast junior hardcourt tournament. She played fantastic tennis and came runner up in her first tournament. Enniskillen coaches Matthew and Louise McGann are delighted to see the juniors from the club competing at such a high level and are also pleased to see a younger generation following in the footsteps of the juniors who have set such a great example at the club.
The tennis club wishes Eve and all the juniors competing all the best in the rest of their tournaments.
