The final round of the Lakeland Cycling Club Road League took place last Wednesday evening on the new Tempo-Lisbellaw circuit.
More than 30 riders assembled for the flat 23-mile course in Tempo village and with three very evenly split groups on the road, the Scratch group was favoured to catch fairly quickly.
Indeed, this was the case, and everyone came together halfway through the second lap. With a large group sprint anticipated there were numerous attempts to form a breakaway.
Mitchel McLaughlin of Swift Pro Carbon was especially active but couldn’t manage to get away.
Conor Sprice did manage to get into a very small break, but with only 20 seconds over the chasing pack, the effort was never going to be successful.
As expected, a large group came up the Maguiresbridge/Tempo road together at a furious pace and the sprint for home started early. The fast men from Scratch were leading all the way and it was a familiar face that took the win as Ciaran Maguire, VC Glendale, took his second win of the league by a good bike length.
There was a blanket finish for the next three with only a quarter of a wheel between them, with Conor Gallagher, Errigal, taking second, and then Mark McGirr and Conor Sprice respectively, both Lakeland.
Another great event and yet again a great community feel as Three Peaks Cycling of Tempo provided many of the marshals for the night. A huge vote of thanks to their club for helping out.
That ends the Road Race League for the season.
The weekend also saw the delayed Ulster Championships take place, hosted by the Island Wheelers club.
Lakeland men Conor Sprice, Seamus McGovern, Nigel Foster, Kyle Fisher and Kenny Boylan all participated. The top results on the day were a very creditable 11th and 16th for Conor Sprice and Seamus McGovern respectively in the M40 event, and yet another great result for Kyle fisher, who was 14th in the Senior Men’s race.
The race was won by yet another familiar name, Adam Ward of Bellosa Club Cyclista, who won the Lakeland GP earlier in the season.
