Enniskillen and District Motorcycle Club Junior member Jamie Lyons was back for the next round of the British Talent Cup this weekend this time back at Silverstone, a differently laid our circuit than the one he had won on previously.
The young rider and his privateer family-based team found themselves forced to remain in the mainland for several weeks as he has had three back-to-back racing weekends.
The team were not hopeful of any podium finish this week as the circuit lay out is mostly made up of straight sections.
As Lyons is one of the taller riders on the Honda Moto 3 machines, he struggles with the weight difference against his lighter competitors and in his words is “getting annihilated on the straights”.
In the European Talent Cup lighter riders have weights added to their bike to counteract any difference, however, this rule is not applied in the UK series.
Not to be deterred Lyons put in his best effort in qualifying but combined with poor weather the young rider had to settle with a 13th place on the starting grid.
Aware of the disadvantages with this circuit layout, in race one the young rider pushed as hard as he could, however, despite losing positions on the straight sections his corner speeds made up for lost time and he ended up with a respectable fourth place finish.
Race two was a repeat of race one however as the 22 lap race got underway, Lyons seemed to be able to find a rhythm that would keep with the front runners, comfortably taking the lead on several occasions.
However, again on the straight sections he would drop back three or four places, but with each lap it was clear that Lyons was a strong contender.
Holding his position, on approach to the finish he took the chequered flag in second place much to the delight of his team.
When asked about his race he said: “I’m really starting to like Silverstone now.
“I’m delighted to have another podium today, coming home in second place just 800ths of a second from the win.
“It was a tight race with top nine riders finishing within less than a second at the flag.
“Massive thanks to all my sponsors and especially Dad and Alan who’ve been in England for almost three weeks to make it possible to do three back to back events.”
Jamie Lyon is currently sitting fifth in the BTC championship standings and is the top privateer.
The final round will be in Donington Park October 1-3, 2021.
