Three juniors and four seniors from Enniskillen Athletic ABC competed in the ICB championships in Derby at the weekend.
With all Enniskillen boxers getting matched against strong opponents, the Enniskillen team came out on top with four wins and three losses in total.
Stand-out boxers of the evening were Daniel Balfour, who got a first-round TKO with a flurry of power body shots mixed up with straight head shots; and Dean Weir, who also got a finish in his bout, knocking his opponent down three times with big, powerful shots earning him a second-round TKO.
Experienced club boxer Dylan Bogue put in a masterful display, showing his class with some beautiful boxing using his movement and counter punches to get the unanimous decision win.
Whilst Ben Miller and Brad Ferguson lost to split decisions, many in attendance at the show felt they were hard done by the judges, which was a shame really as they both had excellent bouts and showed grit and determination, and in spells dominated their opposition.
Club heavyweight Billy White put on an absolute barnstormer with both boxers looking for the big knockout.
But unfortunately for Billy, he got caught by a big punch at the end of the last round, which led to a TKO finish.
Standout club boxer of the evening was club Captain Donatas Rokis, who was competing for the Tri-Nations belt against a very tough Mexican opponent, who had previously stopped all his opponents.
Donatas again put on relentless pressure, mixing up his shot selections, and for four rounds put a pace on that could not be matched by his opponent, earning him a unanimous decision victory and the new middleweight junior Tri-Nations champion title.
It was a proud moment for the youngster, who has trained flat-out in preparation for this fight. He’ll now have to most likely defend the title in February next year.
Mark Gaffney, club Head Coach, said: “I couldn’t be prouder of all the juniors and seniors from the club who stepped up and competed at this event.
“Every one of them showed class and excellent boxing. The experience gained from this after being out of competition for over a year and a half was invaluable in their development,” he added.
