Devenish 2-13 Derrylin 0-04
Devenish are through to the semi-finals of the Intermediate Football Championship following a comfortable victory over last year’s Junior champions Derrylin at Brewster Park on Saturday night.
Apart from a brief spell towards the end of the first half when Derrylin managed to close the gap to a point, the Garrison men controlled this contest and they made that tell on the scoreboard after half time with Ruairi Maguire scoring 2-04 in the second period.
Devenish joint manager Sylvester Mulrone was pleased to progress to the semi-finals.
“Overall, we would be pleased with the performance, especially in the second half when I felt we played a good brand of football and kicked some good scores.
“It was the first night playing under the lights at Brewster Park for some of our lads and it takea a while to adjust to that but when we did I thought we did well.
“We’ll get the heads down now and preapre well over the nexr two weeks for Belcoo who will be a big test,” stated Mulrone.
Devenish were on top from the outset although they were guilty of some wayward shooting in the opening stages of the game before Jason Love landed the first score of the game in the tenth minute.
Two Terry O’Flanagan points from play followed before Fionan O’Brien made it 0-04 to 0-00 at the water-break when he converted a free.
However, despite their dominance, Devenish only found themselves one point to the good at half time as Derrylin finished the half strongly.
Jake Smith slotted over two frees and Eoin Maguire also chipped in with a point to leave it 0-04 to 0-03 at the break.
Devenish though quickly reasserted themselves on the tie at the start of the second half and Tom Treacy drilled over a free before Ruairi Doherty knocked over to make it 0-06 to 0-03.
A good effort from Ruadhri McGoldrick brought Derrylin back to within two but Devenish answered with a monster point from Love and two points from Maguire to put them into a 0-09 to 0-04 advantage.
And it went from bad to worse for Derrylin as they lost midfielder James Dolan to a second yellow card before Terry O’Flanagan ended the third quarter with his third point of the night.
It was all Devenish in the final quarter as Maguire fired over two points before he then hit the first goal of the night with a low drive after good work from Fionan O’Brien to make it 1-12 to 0-04.
O’Brien then followed up with a point and Maguire rounded off a good day for the Garrison outfit when he converted a penalty to leave it 2-13 to 0-04 at the finish.
