Enniskillen Town 1 Mountfield 0
Frank Wallace’s goal on the hour mark proved decisive as Enniskillen Town took the points from their encounter against Mountfield at the Lakeland Forum on Saturday.
Having dominated for long periods Town had only the one goal to show for it but despite a spell of late pressure from the away side, Town held on to deservedly take the points on offer.
For joint manager James McKenna, the pleasing aspect of the game was seeing out the game at 1-0.
“We knew that it was always going to be difficult as Mountfield had put in a lot of good performances this season, especially against teams higher up the table and we knew they would be physical and have a high work rate.
“I think the most pleasing thing was to show that we could see a game out at 1-0, it was good to get tested like that because no matter how much you control a game you are always going to come under pressure late on if you are leading 1-0 and the boys were able to see it through,” said McKenna.
Town did have chances to have scored more goals on the day but didn’t capitalise on those with McKenna happy with the one goal and a clean sheet.
“We could have scored more goals but the one we did get was a good goal and I thought defensively we looked solid the whole game,” he added.
The home side took control of the contest from the opening stages and carved open a string of good chances from wide areas but the finishing touches were missing as it remained scoreless.
Mountfield, for their part, were content to sit back and soak up the pressure but when they did attack they committed numbers forward although they never troubled Gary Doherty in the Town goal over the course of the opening 45 minutes.
The second half continued in the same vein with the home side dictating the play and with an hour gone they were rewarded with the opening goal of the game as Wallace produced a wonderful finish from the angle of the box into the far corner.
Mountfield, who are sitting comfortably in mid-table in the division, did begin to push forward more after this as they went searching for a way back into the game and they did have Town under pressure at the back at times.
However, the home defence, with Eoin Beacom an assured presence on his return from GAA commitments, held firm.
The away side did have two dangerous crosses from wide areas that gave Town concern and one of them required a good stop by Doherty at the back post.
After this though Town were able to see out the game as they secured the points.
Next up though is a tougher test as Town travel to the league leader Dergview Reserves on Saturday, Dergview having taken the points when the sides met in Enniskillen on the opening day of the season.
