The official and long awaited return to golf has arrived. Enniskillen Golf Club was buzzing with anticipation with a great turnout of 87 players eager to participate in the Captain’s Drive in.
Captain Paul Sheridan, Lady Captain Helene Tisdall and Junior Captain Rory Brown squared themselves up to face the first tee with the usual trepidation, all three eager to ace their drive up the first fairway.
Things don’t always go as planned as our Captain, nervous in front of the audience, uncharacteristically, fluffed his shot.
This did not stifle his performance, however, as he went on to have a wonderful round and came in on the winning team.
The competition format was a four person scramble which is always popular as it permits members to mingle and get to know people.
The winning team of Captain Paul Sheridan, Robert Kennedy, Mark Seaney and Irene Bownes returned a great score of 59.1.
They were closely followed with a 59.5 by Micheal Keys, Ian (Slabeur) Lyttle, Seamus Beattie and Rita McKechnie.
In third place, and incidentally a three person team, with a score of 60.2 was Harry Thompson, Matt Doran and Michael Lavin.
Holes 3,4,5 and 6 were officially reopened and the full 18 holes were played.
Lady Captain Helena has recently recovered from injury and was a bit dubious about 18 holes but, resilient as always Helena got around the course the very best.
From what I gather some others found the 18 holes tough enough going but all enjoyed a well earned hot meal of chicken curry and rice, provided by Declan Muldoon from Westend Cafe, on return to the clubhouse.
It was obvious by the atmosphere and buzz about the clubhouse that everyone was glad to be back.
And of course with the Ireland V England rugby match televised, the 20 percent off drinks promotion added to the spirit of things with a win for Ireland capping the occasion.
After 31 years service, Daryll Robinson recently left his post as bar steward to take up alternative employment. A presentation was made in to Daryll in recognition of his loyalty and long service. Daryll a man of few words in his own humble way graciously thanked everyone.
