Enniskillen Athletic 6 Mountfield 0
Enniskillen Athletic did their survival chances the world of good last Saturday as the put six past an understrength Mountfield side.
The home side have it all to play for while in a battle to beat the drop and they did what was needed, and if it had not been for the efforts of goalkeeper Sean Óg McAnespie it could well have been a heavier drubbing for the Omagh side.
In the opening 30 minutes, Athletic dominated, and only for some outstanding saves from McAnespie and the offside flag denying Jacob Britton, they would have been a few goals to the good.
As it was it took until the 32nd minute for the deadlock to be finally broken as Neil McDermott tapped in.
It was only three minutes later that the lead was doubled.
McAnespie mishit a free kick from his box straight to Conor Love who controlled before placing it past the onrushing keeper.
And in the space of eight minutes it was 3-0 as Aaron Nolan found himself up the pitch to find the net after a bit of a scramble in the box.
It was a tough first half for Mountfield who failed to really trouble Peter Phair in the home goals.
In the second half, Athletic continued to play the better football and with 11 minutes played the pick of the goals was scored.
Colm McNally, who was full of energy all day, picked the ball up on the edge of the box and his fine effort found the top corner, 4-0.
A Love free kick was tipped on to the post by McAnespie, who parried the follow up shot to Flaherty who finished to the net but it was disallowed for offside.
It was 5-0 when sub John Joe Strain was put through and his shot was deflected into the net by Paddy Doherty before Love finished the scoring making it 6-0 with the easiest of tap ins following a barnstorming run by Paddy Reihill.
For Athletic’s Darren Rodgers, who was in charge of the side on the day, it was a good performance from the whole team.
“Mountfield were understrength and we could only beat what was in front of us,” he said.
“It probably would have been a lot more only for their keeper who made a few great saves.
“But six goals and a clean sheet, so it’s a good day at the office and the run is still going.
“But we have a very hard game against Enniskillen Rangers on Saturday.”
