When the young players from the Irvinestown Wanderers 2012 football team left home at 6.30am last Sunday morning to travel to Bangor, County Down to compete against representatives from many of the Irish League premiership clubs they were looking forward to a day of challenging matches.
Little did they know though that they would win two massive competitions in which they would remain undefeated and concede no goals.
They were accompanied by Manager Stephen O'Hagan and youth coaches Lynden Johnston, Roly Kane and Sean Cassidy.
In the day long event attended by teams from Linfield, Glentoran, Ballymena, Hollywood, Ballymoney, Crusaders and 13 other Irish League clubs team captain Kyle Johnston and his Irvinestown players won all their matches without conceding a goal thanks to their impressive goalkeeper Caiden Mulligan.
In the semi final Irvinestown beat Crusaders 3-0 and then they excelled in the final to beat St Oliver Plunkets.
In addition to winning the impressive silver cup in the main competition, Irvinestown also won the Friendship Cup for their annual challenge match against Red Star FC. Both trophies are now on display in the Bawnacre Centre.
Before leaving Bangor managers from several of the competing clubs indicated that they wished to travel to Irvinestown on Saturday June 4 to compete in a special youth tournament at the Bawnacre Centre which is being organized by the Irvinestown Wanderers Youth Committee.
