The British Junior Wrestling Competition took place on Saturday May 14. The National Competition was held in the Sport’s Village, Leigh, Manchester with 250 wrestlers representing their clubs and countries. Erne Wrestling Club’s Darragh Love was one of the those aiming to succeed on the Mat.
Looking to build on his wrestling successes this season, Darragh had trained hard for this event and entered in the U20’s 74kg category. At only 17, the Enniskillen Royal pupil was the youngest within a very experienced athletic group.
Darragh was one of four in his section. During the first bout, Darragh easily pinned his opponent securing his win. Darragh’s second match lasted the full six minutes with the Erne wrestler succeeding on points. The final bout was against an experienced Polish wrestler. It was a technically strong match with both wrestlers giving it their full effort. Unfortunately, it was not his match and he lost on points.
Darragh gave a stellar performance at the British Juniors for Erne Wrestling, Fermanagh and Northern Ireland. He returns to the county with a Silver Medal and a fire to return next year to British Juniors to win gold.
Charlotte McGuigan also travelled to British Juniors this weekend, swapping her singlet for a British Wrestling Association (BWA) outfit she took to the Mat refereeing the day’s bouts. This was Charlotte’s first time refereeing at a National event. Sister Cara McGuigan volunteered at the National Championship supporting the referee team as a timekeeper and marker on the scoreboards.
