Lady Captain Kathleen Timoney celebrated a wonderful Captain’s Day on Saturday, July 2, with her family, fellow golfers, guests and friends.
Despite the poor forecasts, the sun appeared and only intermittent light showers disturbed the golfers throughout the day. The ‘Child of Prague’ must have adorned many an Enniskillen garden on Friday night.
Kathleen was out early to welcome everyone. She was delighted to see the beautiful flower arrangements in the clubhouse and the golfers were delighted to have their first opportunity to view the Captain’s prizes – a wonderful array of golf clothing and jewellery.
There was a great deal of discussion in the preceding weeks regarding which golfers were currently in good form and ready to claim at least one of the coveted prizes.
Ever busy Kathleen was there to share the photo shoot on the first tee with the early players, and then, while the golfers were playing, she was able to welcome her guests, fellow golfers from local clubs, Enniskillen, Blacklion and, of course, the ladies from Lough Erne.
While everyone was out on the course, Kathleen enjoyed quality time with her family and grandchildren.
In the meantime, her reliable husband, Finton, was busy serving all golfers well-earned liquid refreshments and goodies on the course.
After completing their golf everyone was treated to afternoon tea and an array of tempting homemade cakes and delicacies, before going home to get ‘dickied up’ and dressed in their finery, and returning to the clubhouse for the evening celebrations.
A tasty buffet was served, followed by the highlight – Lady Captain Kathleen’s speech.
She thanked all the ladies for joining her on the special day, and her Committee and the Handicap Committee for their continued commitment in running the ladies’ club.
She acknowledged Sean Reilly and his greenkeeping staff for their hard work in getting the course in immaculate condition, despite the cold and wet summer of 2022.
It has been a pleasure for Kathleen to welcome seven beginners this year, and she thanked the Club Pro, Damian Mooney, for his support for them.
A big thank-you also went to the catering staff for looking after everyone so efficiently throughout the evening.
However, her biggest thank-you was to her family – son Peter and daughter Danielle and their children, but most of all, to her husband, Finton, for his endless support throughout her year.
Kathleen then handed over to the M&H committee to announce the winners, as follows (see panel).
Ladies’ Section
Lady Captain’s Prize – Maire Newman (35pts BB9)
Past Captain’s Prize – Bridie McCaffrey (31pts)
Committee Prize – Magy Beard (28pts)
Beginner’s Prize – Thecla Jones (13pts over 6 holes)
Front 9 – Myrtle Chambers (17pts)
Back 9 – Bronagh Brown (20pts)
Lady Visitor – Shauna Fee (34pts)
Men’s Section:
1st – Graham Veitch (40pts)
2nd – Rodney Watson (39pts)
Visitor Prize – Damian Mooney (34pts)
Everyone was eagerly awaiting the results of the five main prizes, and it was no surprise that Gross was won by Sharron Miles, who plays off a 10 handicap.
Rosie Treacy was just pipped into fourth place with 33pts. The difficult 12th and 15th holes, with their notorious drains, were her downfall.
Carmel Stephenson took third place, also with 33pts. She got off to a very shaky start, but her Back 9 score limited the damage.
Gillian Wilson played a steady Front 9, but had a little ‘hiccup’ on the Back 9 which cost her dearly, resulting in a score of 35pts.
The Lady Captain’s Prize went to Maire Newman (35pts BB9) – a very worthy winner for her continued steady play throughout the year. Maire was surprised and delighted, and thanked the Lady Captain for the wonderful day.
Everyone enjoyed the remainder of the evening, with music and dancing into the wee small hours of the morning, before the last stragglers were finally taxied home, marking the end to a most enjoyable Lady Captain’s Day.
