Erne Gaels 0-10 Devenish 0-04
Erne Gaels maintained their unbeaten start to the Division One Senior League with a six-point derby victory over Devenish.
On the other side, it is a third consecutive loss for Devenish who are only sitting outside the relegation places thanks to the point they took forward from the Club Players’ Competition.
In what was a low-scoring affair, Erne Gaels’ dominance in the first half set them up for the win as they led by six points at half time.
And while they only scored two more points in the second half, they were able to contain Devenish who could find no way back into the game.
For Belleek manager, Seamus Ryder, he was able to pick from a full squad for the first time this season, but he was not happy with his side’s second-half performance.
“We’d a great first half. We didn’t play well attacking-wise in the second half.
“We should have finished a couple of goal chances. But the defence was excellent throughout,” he said.
The winners had a good spread of scorers over the opening 30 minutes in what was a wet Friday evening in Belleek.
Belleek hit the opening three points of the game thanks to Ryan Lyons, Shane Rooney and Aoghan Kelm.
While Devenish responded with a score from Jamie Flanagan.
This was followed by a point from full forward Terry O’Flanagan which was to be the visitor’s last score of the half.
Belleek would then hit five in a row throughout the remainder of the half with Rooney, Kelm, Greg McGloin and Barry McCann (2) all on target as the sides went in at half time with Belleek leading 0-08 to 0-02.
Devenish needed a good start to the second half and points from O’Flanagan and Darren Brady cut the deficit to four but this was as good as it got for the visitors who would fail to score for the remainder of the game.
But Erne Gaels were struggling as well and they could only two points in the second half as well from Lyons and Dan McCann while they were also guilty of leaving a couple of goal chances behind them.
But in the end, it was enough to seal the victory and keep pace at the top of the league where they are only two points off the top spot.
This Friday, Erne Gaels will be hoping to extend their unbeaten run when they travel across the county to face the bottom of the table Roslea.
For Devenish will hope to kickstart their season when they welcome Derrylin who sit below them in the table by a single point.
