Irvinestown’s John Maguire enjoyed great success at the Irish National Open Veterans Championships at Elm Park Dublin, returning home with two Irish titles.
Maguire secured titles in both the Over 55s Men’s Doubles partnering Pat Geary of Fitzwilliam Club in Dublin and he then teamed up with Dave Cunningham of Harwarden Club in Belfast in the Over 60s Men’s Doubles to add a second title.
“I was over the moon,” said Maguire. “It was only a last minute decision to go due to injuries but I’m glad I did go. I was delighted to have won the two titles, especially the Over 60s because the final was between the four Ulster players who had won the All Ireland back in October. That was definitely the most enjoyable.”
In the 55s John and Pat overcame the number two seeds to qualify for the final as they came from 6-0 down in the championship tie break to eventually seal the win 11-9.
The final also went to a championship tie break before John and Pat came through 4-6, 6-3, 10-5.
In the 60s John and Dave saw off a highly fancied Dublin pairing in round one before defeating the number two seeds in the semi-final 7-5, 6-2.
Then it was into the final where they came up against top seeds and Ulster team mates Willie Noteman (Boat Club Belfast) and David Williams (Windor Tennis Club).
And it was John and Dave who were to come out on top as they claimed the title to make it a double for the Irvinestown player.
