Enniskillen Athletic Boxing Club were amongst the gold medals at the 9 Counties Novice Championships at the weekend in Newry.
Three boxers entered from the club including Orlagh McGoldrick, Cora Corrigan and Conor McDonagh.
Orlagh had a walkover throughout the competition meaning she became champion of her weight class due to the fact there wasn’t an opponent entered into the competition which matched her age and weight.
Conor McDonagh was drawn in a quarter final bout against Dungannon Boxing Club on the Saturday whereby his slick boxing and superior shot selection earned him a convincing unanimous decision victory.
But it was the semi final on the Sunday where he showed his class.
He was up against a very competent boxer from Lisburn, but he was never fazed and put on a display of excellent boxing beating his opponent to the punch in each round to eventually stop him in the third round. He now moves onto the final next weekend.
The star of the show was Cora Corrigan.
In her first competitive bout and drawn in a straight final from a girl from Ards Boxing Club, she showed very little sign of nerves and exactly why she’s in for a very bright season.
She gave her opponent a standing count within the first 10 seconds of the bout with a blistering flurry of strikes.
Then at the 45 second mark of the first round she forced a referee stoppage with again powerful accurate shots.
Cora is entered along with Orlagh and Tegan at the club in Europe’s biggest female boxing competition next week in Dublin, where all three of them will again be gunning for gold against boxers from such countries as America, Canada, Spain and Italy.
