Derrychara United 5 Clonard 0
Derrychara United have equalled their best ever run in the fonaCAB Junior Cup as they secured their place in round three with a 5-0 victory over Clonard.
The Enniskillen side notched up five different goal scorers with Lee Glass, Jamie Lee Fawcett, Winston Moran and Ian Carruthers all adding second-half goals to Eamon McCaffrey’s opener.
The victory provided a lift for the club, which cast aside off-pitch distractions about a change of manager to produce one of their best recent showings.
“It was a good all-round performance,” said club Chairman, Johnny Noble.
“The guys started to play football in the second half and started to go at them. We deserved to win. It was a good response from the lads.
“They have all stuck together and trained well and we were pleased with the result, and the response we got from the players.
“We are away now to Aquinas II and that is another one to look forward to. We have never got beyond the third round, so maybe this year we can break that duck.”
There was little to choose between the sides in the opening exchanges but midway through the half the visiting team from Belfast did create a good opportunity from a deep cross, but their back post header went wide of the upright.
Derrychara’s first effort at goal fell to striker Lee Glass, but the Clonard keeper kept out his shot. The breakthrough finally arrived after 37 minutes when Derrychara won a corner kick, and Eamon McCaffrey rose highest to head in the opener.
The goal lifted the home team, and they continued to press forward with Glass once again denied by the goalkeeper before half time.
Derrychara extended their lead 13 minutes into the second period when Glass eventually got the better of the opposition goal keeper, before Jamie Lee Fawcett made it 3-0 from close range after Ollie Russell had evaded several challenges.
Winston Moran soon added a fourth and could have added to his personal tally, but twice fired wide of the post when well-placed.
In the final minutes of the contest, Derrychara wrapped up the victory with a close-range effort from Ian Carruthers.
