Two Erne wrestlers travelled to Largs, Scotland for the Scottish Open last weekend. The event was held in the Sport Scotland National Sport centre on Saturday.
Naoise McManus took the gold medal by pinning her opponent in the finals after racking up a series of points during the match. Naoise has been wrestling for a short time but is a super athlete as a crossover with gymnastics. She has picked up the technical aspects of the sport very quickly and demonstrates great potential in wrestling.
Darragh Love continues his fantastic progress in competing in the senior ranks and coming away with the silver medal after a very tough bout in the finals, losing by close points. Darragh dominated in the earlier matches by scoring so many points, the referee had to stop the matches.
In Olympic Wrestling, a win can come by straight points win, a fall or pin which happens when an opponent is held flat on their back for a fraction of a second.
The third method to win is to score 10 points clear of your opponent.
Both of these wrestlers are now preparing for the English Junior Championships at the start of March.
In the meantime, Darragh will be competing again next weekend in Bordeaux, France and then the English Senior championships on February 11 along with Ivan Enchev and Matthew Crozier from Erne Wrestling Club.
The club will also be holding the St Patrick’s Wrestling Tournament in Irvinestown on March 18 where clubs from all over Ireland, North and South, will be taking part.
