The Erne Boxing Club’s great season continues to go from strength to strength. Last week their young female protégé Cora Corrigan was competing in the National Schoolgirl Championship finals at the National Boxing Stadium in Dublin.
In the quarter-final of the Girl 3 (Under 14s) 57kgs class on Tuesday she was pitted against Dublin champion Sophie Davidson (Esker Boxing Club).
Davidson with significant height and reach advantages made the better start and caught the aggressive Corrigan with plenty of jabs to take the opening round.
In the round two Corrigan put her punches together in clusters and had better success. Davidson also scored with some good shots of her own but on balance the higher work rate and greater competitivness saw Corrigan edge the session.
In the final round Corrigan started at a blistering pace and her skilful Dublin opponent couldn’t keep her off.
Late into the round Corrigan forced her opponent to take a standing count after applying sustained pressure and landing with several hard punches.
Despite the strong finish from Corrigan, on the whole it was a close contest and it came as no surprise that a split-decision was announced but it went 3-2 in favour of Corrigan.
On the following Thursday, Corrigan was in action against the Antrim champion Katie Nolan (Glin Boxing Club).
Corrigan, buoyed by her previous win, started fast and tore into Nolan with a flurry of unanswered punches to force a standing count early on.
She then applied constant pressure for a further 30 seconds and with Nolan struggling the referee issued another standing count and called a halt to the contest in round one.
The win meant Corrigan had progressed to the National Final due to be boxed on the Saturday.
However, the Erne Boxing Club are hoping to get the contest rescheduled as Cora Corrigan will be away with an Erne Boxing Club team competing in the Tuff Nuff Boxing Tournament in Vordingborg, Denmark over the weekend.
“Cora boxed extremely well for her first time competing in the National Stadium. She beat a good boxer on the Tuesday but was physically too strong for her opponent on Thursday,” said Erne Boxing Club Head Coach, Sean Crowley.
“She is due to box Kasie Joyce from Clonmel Boxing Club in the final and we are hoping to get the final put back a week.
“It’s important for Cora’s long-term development to box this weekend in Denmark and equally she is so excited about having her first trip away with the club that she doesn’t want to miss out on it.
“She started boxing with Enniskillen Athletic BC and only joined us last December as a three bout Novice but has won an Ulster title and reached a National Final since joining us, and is definitely one to watch for the future,” he added.
The Erne Boxing Club have a team of eight boxers heading to Vordingborg, Denmark for the inaugural Tuff Nuff Boxing tournament at the weekend.
“We’re bringing a mix of senior boxers, juniors and females.
“This is the first time this tournament is being held so the standard of competition is unknown but we are confident of success,” commented Crowley.
