Roslea 1-10 Newtownbutler 1-09

Roslea responded to their defeat to Tempo last Thursday evening with a one-point victory over Newtownbutler on Sunday afternoon.

Roslea manager Ciaran Murphy said after the game: “We played very well for 90 per cent of the game, but then we fell asleep and let Newtownbutler back into it at the end.”

Four points

Goalkeeper Sean Quigley kicked four points for the home side in the first half with a 45’ alongside three free kicks.

Half-back Diarmuid King responded for the away side as he split the posts at the other end with two well-taken free kicks to bring Newtown into the game. Niall Cosgrove and Niall Clerkin added scores for Roslea before King added another free kick before the half time whistle to leave the score at 0-06 to 0-03 at Shamrock Park.

First goal

Cosgrove found the first goal of the game not long into the second half as he won a long ball in and fired the ball into the bottom right corner of the net.

Cosgrove and Shane Lynch added points to push Roslea further ahead and take a firm grip of the contest heading into the final 15 minutes.

Newtownbutler were able to gather a late scoring surge as King was on target again in the second half alongside Jarlath Jackman who added two points.

Referee Kevin Donnelly pointed to the spot deep into injury time when Newtown forward Ger O’Keefe was fouled in the box. King stepped up to convert the penalty and see the away side only lose out by one point in the end.

A weakened Newtownbutler side will be hoping to have players back for their next fixture at home to Coa.

Darren Chapman will be hoping to see his side build on their previous home form following their draw with Teemore last Thursday evening.

‘A tough game’

Roslea will travel to Emmett Park next Friday as they aim to make it back-to-back wins. Roslea Manager Murphy said: “We haven’t played Lisnaskea in juniors or seniors at all yet this season, so we don’t really know what to expect from them, but it will be a tough game, I’m sure.”
