Irvinestown 2-7 Derrylin 2-9
Two goals from Diarmuid Owens edged Derrylin to victory at St. Molaise’s Park last Friday as Sean Donnelly’s side picked up their second win in Division One this season.
Two early Irvinestown goals were cancelled out by Owens late on as Derrylin took control in the final 10 minutes of the contest.
Derrylin manager Sean Donnelly was pleased to see his side pick up the win despite Irvinestown holding the lead for the majority of the contest: “Irvinestown went seven points up after getting a couple of early goals in the first half. We then got ourselves back into it and were four points behind at the break.
"We were a lot better in the second half, but they were still up by three with 10 minutes to play before we got a goal and then we ended up going in front and then the game sort of fizzled out after that.”
The home side made a fast start to the game as two goals inside the first 15 minutes from Caolan Ward and Kevin McDonnell gave them an early lead.
A long-range shot from Ward led to the ball being dropped into the net by the Derrylin goalkeeper to add to Liam Murphy’s early point.
Mark Murphy fired a shot between the posts at the other end for Derrylin before Josh Largo Elis went on a strong solo run in the forward line and fed McDonnell who stayed calm to fire the ball into the net.
Owens and Murphy were able to add points for the away side as Irvinestown went into half-time with the lead.
However, Derrylin were able to get themselves back into the game in the second half as Murphy added another point and Derrylin found their first goal as a ball into the forward line was gathered by Owens who finished to make it a closer contest.
Points from Conor O’Hanlon, Ward and a couple from Ronan Ormsby meant Irvinestown led the contest going into the final 15 minutes but a driving run from Owens led to him firing the ball into the top corner to rally the visitors.
Further Points from Fearghal McGovern, Owens and Murphy were enough for Derrylin to come back and win the game, moving them up to seventh spot in the league.
Next up for Irvinestown is a tough task away to Enniskillen Gaels while Derrylin play Kinawley with manager Donnelly adding: “It’s a local derby. I’m sure it will be a tight game, both teams will be looking to get something from it.”
