Irvinestown 0-10 Kinawley 0-13
Kinawley took a big step towards a league final spot following their three point victory over Irvinestown on Friday night.
The result lifts the Brian Borus up to second place in the table with two games to go and if they can secure wins over Erne Gaels and Belnaleck then they will progress to the Division One decider against Derrygonnelly.
However, assistant manager Sean Leonard stresses that they are simply taking things one game at a time.
“We are just trying to improve week on week and see where it takes us,” he said.
We have Belleek this week and they will also be looking the points to push up the table. They were missing a few players last week but they will be back this week and it will be a tough game. They are all big games from now on in.”
Irvinestown made life difficult for Kinawley on Friday night and Leonard acknowledged that was what they expected going into the game.
“It was a tight game as we knew it would be as Irvinestown are looking to get points but I felt we showed more urgency in the second half and we picked off scores and were able to see the game out from that,” he added.
With both sides missing players, there was little between the sides in the opening 30 minutes, Irvinestown going into at the break leading by the minimum, 0-06 to 0-05.
Josh Largo Elis, who was an influential figure in the first half, landed two points for the St Molaise side while Liam Murphy and Ronan Ormsby were also on target.
For Kinawley, Sean McManus, Eoghan McManus, Paddy McGovern and Shaun Doherty tagged on scores.
The Brian Borus though started to gain the upperhand in the third quarter as Sean McManus, Eoghan McManus and Doherty rattled off points to see them open up a cushion.
Irvinestown responded with points coming from Ormsby but with Sean McManus among the points late on for Kinawley they went on to run out three point victors, 0-13 to 0-10.
While Kinawley will be hoping to push on at the top of the table, it is matters at the other end which will concern Irvinestown. They currently sit second from bottom with a crunch clash against a Belcoo side who sit two points above them to follow this Friday night.
