DERRYGONNELLY joint manager Sean Flanagan was pleased with his side’s display as they comfortably accounted for Belnaleck last Sunday but he stresses that there are areas that they will need to improve on if they are to overcome Erne Gaels this Sunday in the battle for top spot in Group A.
The Harps made it two wins on the spin as they proved too strong for Belnaleck. The away side took control early in the game and after Oisin Smyth hit the net towards the end of the first half they never looked in any danger.
“We are happy with the result and more importantly, the performance. There are still aspects of our play to improve on and we will work on these. We got a good start to the game which was key and we kept a good energy and focus throughout which was very pleasing,” said Flanagan.
However, he knows that they will have to lift their game again when they face an Erne Gaels side who like Derrygonnelly have won their two games to date comfortably.
“It’s a game we are looking forward to but we realise what a challenge it is as well,” said Flanagan. “Belleek are in top form and have scoring power throughout their team. Some elements of our play will need to be better than last week or Belleek will take full advantage but these are the types of games players look forward to.”
Belnaleck assistant manager, Daniel Kille, was disappointed with the loss to Derrygonnelly.
“We are again obviously disappointed with such a wide margin defeat, we aimed for a good start, didn’t get it as Derrygonnelly came flying out of the blocks and looked razor sharp punishing our errors time and time again on the scoreboard,” he said.
And he knows they will have to score more if they are to stay in the championship.
“Our scores for won’t win any games at this level so we will aim to get this facet of our game polished a bit leading into this weekend,” he added.
However, he expects a serious test against Roslea with the winner qualifying for the quarter-finals and avoiding the relegation play-off.
“We know the challenge that lies ahead on Sunday which has a big incentive on its own to stay in this year’s championship.
“Roslea have shown a serious hunger and intensity in their opening two games, this no doubt will go down to the final moments and who has that extra bit of class in the end.”
