Last week saw the Annual Senior Closed Tournament at Enniskillen Lawn Tennis Club played with many spectators attending over the course of the week.
The Tournament was generously sponsored by The Enniskillen Hotel.
Sixty-nine members participated in an enthralling week of tennis with many members playing both singles and doubles events.
The biggest entry was in the A/B Singles Men’s event with 18 members vying to be the winner. However, it was John Slowey and Matthew McGann, the number one and number two seeds respectively who reached the final. The final proved to be a tightly contested match with Matthew staging an impressive comeback after John took the first set 6-4. Matthew was able to lift his level, winning the second set on a tie break thereby bringing the match to a championship tie break resulting in a 6/4 6/7 5/10 win.
In the A/B Ladies Singles event, a round-robin format proved to be a tough event with some great matches between Leslie Campbell, Vanessa McBrien, Helena Stirling and Niamh Webb.
The eventual overall winner was Vanessa beating Helena 7/6 2/6 6/10 with both ladies playing long rallies and displaying a lot of tactical play.
The A/B Men’s Doubles was won by Aidan Corrigan and Connor Donaldson overcoming John-Ross Dundas and Declan McBride winning 7/5 6/3. Aidan had an excellent week of tennis whilst also winning the C/D Men’s Singles beating Charlie Hutchings in a closely fought match resulting in 6/1 7/6 11/9.
In the A/B Ladies Doubles event, which is always a highly competitive affair, Leslie Campbell and Jenny Humphreys beat Corrie Cadden and Sonja Hateboer in an enthralling match with outstanding play from all four players and with Jenny and Leslie holding their nerve, they narrowly won in the championship tie break resulting in 6/4 2/6 10/7.
Matthew McGann partnered with Maxine Leary in the A/B Mixed Doubles event against Clive Funston and Liz Murphy. This is always another popular event at the Club but it was Matthew and Maxine who prevailed, winning a very entertaining match 6/3 6/3.
The C/D Ladies Singles final was another match-up between the number one and number two seeds respectively, Fiona Balfour and Katrina Cathcart.
Both ladies displayed some great tennis with lots of rallies and skill on the court and it was Katrina who prevailed winning the match 6/4 6/3.
The C/D Men’s Doubles final was played out by Adam Gannon and partner Colm Wike beating Michael Cadden and Peter Neill. All four men displayed lots of tactical play and skill on court but it was Adam and Colm who took the match winning 6/4 6/4.
The C/D Mixed Doubles was won by Victoria Scott and Brendan Duffy in a very competitive group of 13 pairings but it was Victoria and Brendan who won in a very exciting match beating Yulia Hamilton and Niall Dolan 6/3 6/4.
A huge thanks was acknowledged by Mark Cousins to Sonja Hateboer for organizing the tournament and the refreshments over the week and to all those who brought salads and desserts and helped out in the kitchen, it was all very much appreciated by members and the senior committee.
