Erne Boxing Club fighter, Rhys Owens, competed in the EUBC European U22 Championships in Budva, Montenegro this week.
Held in the Mediterranean Sports Centre in Budva, the Fermanagh boxer’s first fight took place on Monday against Spanish opponent, Victor Manuel Catalino Vargas.
And despite dropping a very close first session, he made adjustments to win the last two rounds and register a 4-1 won over the strong Spaniard fighter.
The victory put Owens into the last 16 of the competition where he was fighting Azerbaijan boxer, Maksud Khasmetov.
Despite forcing his opponent to take a standing count in the final round, Owens lost out on a split decision.
The early rounds saw little between Owens and Maksud and while there was the standing count for Khasmetov and a narrowly avoided split decision, the Azerbaijani boxer moved into the quarter-finals.
Erne Boxing Club head coach, Sean Crowley, was also in Budva at Team Manager.
