Three points out of a possible four from the first two games in NFL Division Two is something that Fermanagh would have been more than happy with before a ball was kicked in the campaign.
A draw with Meath and victory over Kildare has been a positive opening for Kieran Donnelly’s Ernemen and Conor McShea admits that they are pleased with how things have gone in the early stages of the league.
“We are taking it game by game but the Meath and Kildare games were definitely one’s that we would have been aiming to take something out of so we are happy with that. Look, it was just about taking it one game at a time and we are looking forward now to the rest of the league,” said the Enniskillen Gaels man.
And McShea feels that the work that the squad put in during pre-season has stood to them in the first two games.
We worked very hard in pre-season, there was a big emphasis put on our conditioning and you can see it. I thought our fitness was clear to see against Kildare and it helped us out big time against Meath when they were cutting us open down the middle and boys were able to get back and make important tackles that ultimately won us a point that day,” he added.
Last Saturday night, Fermanagh were never behind as they deservedly secured the win over the Lilywhites at Brewster Park.
“It was a good performance and we were able to see it out. I thought we always looked comfortable and were good for the win,” he commented.
There is no doubt that picking up points at home will be vital for the Ernemen and they will be keen to make Brewster Park a fortress as they try to cement their position in the division. McShea knows the importance of winning their home games.
“It’s massive for us, especially in Division Two when you are facing a higher level of opposition. To win your home games is vital and then try and pick up some points on the road. If we can get the home games in the bag it will put us in good stead,” he said.
Next up for Fermanagh is a trip to Letterkenny to take on Jim McGuinness’ Donegal on Saturday February 17, and it is a test that McShea is looking forward to.
“Obviously, they have Jim McGuinness back in charge and they have had two good performances so it will be a big test but one that we are looking forward to. With the break this week we will be able to get a good bloc of work in and prepare for that game,” he stated.
McShea has produced two impressive performances so far in the league and he is enjoying playing his part for the team.
“I’ve just been trying the best I can to help the team on the day, no matter what it takes and I’m really enjoying it. You just want to be playing at as high a level as you can.”
