It was successful trip for Fermanagh schools who made the trip to Mallusk in Co. Antrim for the NASUWT Schools’ Cross Country.
St. Michael’s College, Enniskillen took three team golds winning the Senior, Intermediate and Minor titles.
Frank Buchanan led St. Michael’s Seniors to a comfortable success with three athletes in the top 12 while the fast finishing Sean Corry in 4th helped their Intermediate team edge a close contest with St. Columba’s College Secondary School, Stranorlar and St. Malachy’s College, Belfast.
St. Michael’s were beaten on count back in the Junior category after tying with St. Colman’s College, Newry. They also took silver in the mini-team race.
St. Michael’s finished the event as the top boys school overall for the fifth time while all four age teams qualified for the All Ireland finals.
There was also an individual gold for Piaris Toner in the Minor category and bronze for Jack Donnelly in the Junior category.
Other schools to achieve success was Enniskillen Royal Grammar School (ERGS) as their runner, Harry McKenzie picked up a silver medal in the Intermediate boys’ race.
In the girls’ Kate Kelly from Mount Lourdes, Enniskillen dominated the mini girls and led her team to gold while there was a silver in the senior girls’ race for Annabel Morrison of ERGS behind European junior seventh placer Anna Gardiner.
Mount Lourdes took silver team medals in the Junior led by Orlagh Kelly and bronze in the Minor girls’ race where Megan Mullally was their first finisher.
It was a fantastic day for the athletes with the leading teams and individuals qualifying for the All Ireland finals in Dublin on March 9.
