Fermanagh eventually came good against a dogged but limited Warwickshire side in Brewster Park on a crisp spring day.
And while Erne Boss Joe Baldwin did not seem overly concerned about an 18 wides tally ahead of a two-week break, at least 12 from scoreable positions could be very costly against a better calibre of opposition.
Fermanagh play Lancashire in Brewster Park in a fortnight and are table toppers of Division 3B of the National hurling League.
A physically imposing Warwickshire had the jitters in front of the posts too hitting a total of 10 wide but could only manage a total of 1-01 in the entire second half after leading by 1-04 to 0-03 after 16 minutes.
The usually deadly accurate Luca McCusker was off target-hitting 10 wides-but he still managed to drive his side on with some pin-point passing that repeatedly opened the visitor’s defence.
But Fermanagh can thank their speedy corner forward, Tom Keenan, for hitting the vital goal that gave his side a 1-12 to 2-04 lead in the 50th minute.
The excellent Keenan’s clinical finish gave the home side some real momentum and they pretty much cruised to victory after a 17-minute scoring famine.
And the gifted Sean Corrigan was back in the Erne jersey for the first time since last year and hit two fine long-range points.
Crucially, the vastly experienced John Duffy had a fine final quarter as Fermanagh went for the line.
A physical Warwickshire, backboned by some brawny hurlers from the deep South and Galway with syrupy brogues were always going to be an awkward proposition.
And their line-outs are very much an unknown quantity given the amount of hurlers emigrating and returning to the home soil.
Thus it proved in the opening half as wasteful Fermanagh, who hit 11 wides struggled to come to terms with the superior physical power of their opponents in the first 20 minutes.
Warwickshire began briskly and wing forward David Devine confidently slotted over a point after Kelvin Magee was fouled after just a minute.
But Fermanagh hit back with two well-struck efforts from Duffy and McCusker who was unusually off colour hitting six first-half wides, five from placed balls.
And then, some great play between Danny Teague and Caolan Duffy resulted in the latter striking a fine point to put Fermanagh ahead by 0-03 to 0-01 by the 6th minute.
But Warwickshire were growing into the game and the nifty Devine narrowed the gap with a point.
Big Jack Grealish was getting a foothold at midfield and a long ball into the Fermanagh full-back line was not dealt with and Magee ran for 20 metres before planting a great shot low into the corner of the Fermanagh net.
The goal galvanized the visitors and Magee followed the goal with a point as did Grealish to put them into a 1-04 to 0-03 lead by the 16th minute.
Ironically, that was to be their last score of the half as a smaller but fitter Fermanagh gradually took control.
McCusker pointed from a free, their first score in 10 minutes while Jimmy Tormey added another from play with McCusker pointing a close-range free to leave the visitors leading by a point on a score of 1-04 to 0-06.
But Fermanagh had racked up five wides by this stage as Ryan Bogue levelled matters from a free in the 23rd minute.
However, despite controlling matters the home side hit a further five wides as Warwickshire took off the injured John Collins and threw on Kevin Murphy at the break with the sides tied on a 1-04 to 0-07 at half-time.
Warwickshire were a bit jittery too and Grealish hit three bad wides.
But those 11 first-half wides were a cause of major concern for the Ernesiders as seven of them were from pretty scorable slots.
Fermanagh were on top in most sectors but hit three early wides before Warwickshire hit back with a goal against the run of play.
A long ball into the Erne defence was batted out to the lively Devine who smashed the sliotar to the roof of the net through a forest of sticks to put his side into a 2-04 to 0-07 lead.
Tommy Duane was on target interspersed with a few wides before Keenan levelled matters in the 48th minute.
Duffy and Duane pushed the home side into a 0-12 to 2-04 lead before Keenan’s crucial clinical strike which left the home side leading by 1-12 to 2-04.
The remainder of the match was pretty much a canter as Fermanagh had further points from Duffy, and subs Corrigan and Cahir McManus for an eventual comprehensive win.
