Dergview Reserves manager Andy Sproule has vowed that his team will approach their first-ever Mulhern Cup final with no fear, despite taking on reigning league champions Tummery Athletic.
The manager knows Tummery will go into the Fermanagh and Western showpiece final as favourites as they chase an unprecedented league and cup treble, but Sproule is happy to accept the tag of underdog.
“Tummery will obviously go into the game as favourites,” he conceded.
“They have proven that they can win on the big occasion with the successes they have had, but we will go in with no fear.”
Dergview Reserves do have last season’s Junior Cup final triumph as evidence that they can produce their best football on the big occasion, but Friday night’s clash at Ferney Park comes against a team that they last defeated back in November 2021.
They have lost their last four games against Tummery by an aggregate of 10-2, but Sproule believes those results are not relevant to this season’s final.
“As our boys will say, those cup games all boil down to how you do on the day, and we have proven against Tummery that we can be a match for them so we will not fear them.”
Dergview sit seventh in the league table after a season of mixed results, but Sproule believes the cup atmosphere will bring the best out in the players.
“It will be a good day for the club and a good day out for my lads,” he said.
“We set our stall out last season when we won the Junior, and the boys have now proved they can win on the big occasion. This season has been a bit up and down in the league but as regards cups it seems to bring the best out in us. We look forward to the occasion.”
