“Absolutely incredible,” said Enniskillen Rangers manager Michael Kerr after his team clinched a Mercer League and Junior Cup double at the Ball Range on Tuesday night.
A 1-0 over Tummery Athletic sealed a first league title in five years to end the Dromore’s side's winning reign over the Fermanagh and Western's top division.
A season that has stretched into the end of May ended in delight for the Enniskillen side with two trophies in five days.
“The first half was absolutely terrible, it looked like we were afraid of losing the game as opposed to going and winning it,” said Kerr on the performance.
“I said that in no uncertain terms at halftime. I think people might have noticed that we were out quite quick at halftime, I didn’t need to say too much. I think the players knew that as well.
"Look, if I put myself in their shoes, it is probably a fear of losing but sometimes you have to go out and grasp the opportunity in front of you. I thought we were better in the second half, the subs made a difference and brought a bit of impetus into the game.
"Willie (Burleigh) and Stuart (Rainey) fantastic again. Nobody remembers the game, it's about who's top of the league and who takes the trophy at the end of the season. It won’t be a game that lives long in the memory but I don’t care.”
Tummery and Rangers have met four times already in 2024, with Rangers taking two league wins and a Junior Cup semi-final victory, with Tummery winning on penalties against their old foes en route to their Mulhern Cup success.
“I’m sick of the sight of them because they are a tough opposition,” Kerr continued.
“I mean that in a nice way. They are worthy champions, they’re after winning three leagues in a row. That takes a big push from everybody within the club and credit to them for doing that.
"Now we’re the champions, so, next year is going to be a big challenge and see if we can do what Tummery done. Can we go and win two in a row? Can we regroup in the summer?”
Kerr added he is unsure how many of his current squad will remain for next season but promised to go for more silverware regardless of who stays and who goes.
“I don’t know how our squad will be, that’s one thing I spoke to the boys there at the Junior Cup, I said it’s more than likely, probably the last time ever that this specific squad will enter a changing room together and leave a changing room together.
"That team might not be together next year at this level. I expect some of our players to go and step up and play at a higher level. In one sense you’re losing some of your best players, but it shows we’re doing the right thing here.
"I’ll make sure I rebuild a squad if needs be, bring in two or three quality players to try and retain our Junior (Cup) and league and try to win a Mulhern Cup.
"That’s the aspiration. We don’t set small targets. At the end of the day, we want to win at this club.
"Thankfully we have had a great year this year and we'll enjoy the celebrations now for a few weeks, definitely tonight and tomorrow and we’ll see where the weekend takes us.”
