Tempo 0-12 Irvinestown 1-12

One goal separated Tempo and Irvinestown as the sides again had another extremely close affair against each other.

Nothing separated the pair when they met in the opening game of the season in  2A of the Club Players’ Competition but a penalty from substitute Barry Goodwin in the second half of Sunday’s game at St Patrick’s Park was the difference-maker at fulltime.

Tempo dropped down to fourth after suffering their first defeat of the league following victories over Coa and Aghadrumsee.

Meanwhile, Irvinestown made it three wins from three following on from their handsome win against St Pat’s the last time out.

Irvinestown led the Maguires 0-8 to 0-7 at halftime with Mattie McDermott opening the scoring for the visiting side.

Ronan Ormsby kicked a free to add to that with those two both adding another point also in the half.

Conor O’Hanlon, Gary Maguire, Michael Mahon and Joey Millar all chipped in with points while Tiarnan Bogue, Ben Warnock and Oisin Murphy were all on target for Tempo to keep the game close.

It was another tight affair in the second half with neither side giving much away in a hard-fought contest similar to when both teams met in last year’s Intermediate Championship at the same venue.

Ormsby added a mark for the away side and Maguire kicked two frees.

Aidan Breen and Eunan McCann were on target at the other end but the major play of the game came when Irvinestown were awarded a penalty with less than 10 minutes remaining.

A shot that looked to be going over came off the post and the dropping ball led to a penalty for the away side with Goodwin stepping up to score it, despite only coming on five minutes beforehand.

Josh Largo Elis kicked Irvinestown’s final point as they came out on top by three points.
