Ballyconnell native Leona Maguire became the first Irish player to win a Ladies European Tour event last Friday with an outstanding one-shot victory at the Aramco Team Series event.
The 29-year-old landed an eagle on the final hole to seal the victory at Hemel Hempstead.
Maguire was a front-runner heading into the tournament and led from the opening round but after a difficult spell, she bounced back to finish strongly, taking $75,000 for her efforts in the process.
It was win number five since turning professional for the world number 23 following two previous wins on the LPGA Tour and two on the Symetra Tour.
After a disappointing final round for Maguire, it looked like American Alison Lee was going grasp victory from her clutches, however, a bogey on the last hole scuppered her chances of glory.
Speaking after the win, Maguire said: “I did it the hard way today, I feel like. It was tough out there. I didn’t play my best golf but Dermot my caddie just kept saying be patient. It was nice to finish in style on 18.
"I’m looking forward to the summer ahead and couldn’t ask for a better start. I was just trying to hit a good putt.
"It was a little bit like a Solheim Cup, I knew no Irishwoman had ever won on the LET before. That putt was for me, that putt was for my family and that putt was for Ireland. It was a proud moment.”
