Irish duo Ross Corrigan and Nathan Timoney claimed third and an automatic place in the rowing Men’s Pair semi-final after a thrilling finish in Paris on Sunday morning.

A 10am start saw Spain, Ireland, Switzerland, USA and New Zealand all meet in heat one of the Olympics with Spain taking first, New Zealand in second and Ireland just pipping Switzerland for third while USA trailed in at last place.

It was a slow enough start for the Fermanagh pair as Spain and Switzerland pushed out ahead with New Zealand leading after the first 500m but a grand slam final 500m saw all first four places compete for first.

Ireland will now go straight through to the semi-finals where they await their opponents for a place in the Olympic final.

The pair from, Enniskillen and Kinawley, will take great confidence in defeating a Switzerland, who have been successful in recent times.

RTÉ’s commentator said after the race: “That was incredible you will not see a better race than that.”
