Irvinestown 3-16 Brookeborough 2-07

A strong second-half from Shane McDermott’s Irvinestown eventually led them to victory over Brookeborough after a tight opening 45 minutes between the sides.

Goals from Paul Leonard, Josh Largo-Elis and Ronan Ormsby aided them to a sixth win from seven games as they remain top of Division Two.

After two first-half goals, Brookeborough were unable to keep up with the pace of the hosts but were without some key names.

They will have the chance to move off the foot of the league table on Friday when they host Coa.

Speaking after Friday’s game, manager Donal Boyle said: “We were two points down at halftime. We drew level in the middle of the second half but fell away badly with 10 minutes to go.

"We have a couple of injuries at the minute and squad depth is just not there, but it was a good performance for three-quarters of the game.”

The home side opened the scoring at St. Molaise’s Park with Dylan Bogue then levelling the game shortly after.

A free from Gary Maguire was added to by Barry Goodwin until Brookeborough struck for their first goal midway through the half as a high ball into the square was caught by Damian Curran who finished high to the net, to make it 0-04 to 1-01.

Two further points from the home side were met with another Bogue point. A dropped Irvinestown shot paved the way for their first goal when Paul Leonard fisted in from close range and another point via Maguire followed, but Rory Greene would give the visitors hope on the stroke of halftime as he palmed the ball into the net after a well-worked hand-passing move, to leave it at 1-07 to 2-02 going towards the changing rooms.

Two early second-half frees from Greene and Bogue tied the game but Goodwin, James Hanna and Kevin Duffy edged Irvinestown back out in front.

Bogue would go on to kick three more frees bringing his tally to 0-05, however, the away side were not able to score in the final 15 minutes as Ormsby fisted across for Josh Largo-Elis to palm in a second goal.

Points from Maguire, Liam Murphy, Mattie McDermott, Ormsby and Cormac McAuley put Irvinestown in the ascendency as Largo-Elis returned the favour for Ormsby, late on, when he played the forward in one-on-one to finish for a third goal.
