After Saturday’s postponement, the Yeoman Irish Nationals eventually got underway on Sunday with a successful day of sailing for the Lough Erne Yacht Club in Enniskillen.

Race Officer Mick Whaley was given a decision to make when weather conditions threatened an entertaining day of action with no wind to aid the event on Saturday.

However, the sun and a breeze made for a perfect afternoon on Sunday as the Yeoman boats made their way into the water.

Honeybee, helmed by Declan Dooley and crewed by Stephen Carson launched into an opening lead but a change in wind saw them drop to third spot.

Fermanagh native Warren Cooper and crew Leah Pederson took full advantage and snatched first place after soaring ahead to take the first honours of the day.

The Nationals also had its first all Lady Youth team as Emily Torrens and Emma Brines competed in Amber.

Emma’s brother Peter went out with Declan Fox in Utter Chaos in a well-spirited battle.

Scorpio was helmed by Joey Kelly, a well-awarded sailor who with another youth sailor Luke Valentine combined their talents to sail in at top spot.

The top three boats all had first-place positions among the four races and a few second spots too.

Thief of Time was definitely hot on the heels of the winning boat, with five points after discard.

Lady Rose helmed by father and son team Raymond and Brian Morrison used their experience to get over the line first and celebrate winning the Irish Nationals.

Overall, it was a successful outing for the Lough Erne Yacht Club as they encourage more to get involved in sailing with courses for beginners and boats for people of all abilities.
