Newtownbutler 2-05 Tempo 3-12
Tempo took another step towards Division One football as they fought past the battle of Newtownbutler at Páirc Chanónach last Friday.
Aidan Breen, Tiarnan Bogue and Caolan Corry all netted for the away side as the Maguires got one back over Friday’s opponents following Newtownbutler’s win at St. Patrick’s Park in the Club Players’ Competition, earlier this year.
After building up a six-point lead by halftime, Tempo pushed further ahead to inflict a third defeat in a row for Newtown.
Tempo joint manager was left impressed by Friday’s hosts.
“We just tried to keep them at arm’s length in the second half,” he said on the win.
“They are a talented young team, so, we were happy with what we were able to get from the game.
"We know Newtown well, they beat us in the Club Players’ (Competition) at the start of the year, they have plenty of potential and have some great young players, so, we were happy with the win there.”
Two games stand in the way of return to the topflight for Tempo and if they are able to see off St. Pat’s this Friday, all eyes will turn to a showdown league finale fixture with third-placed Teemore for the final promotion spot.
“Donagh will be a very tough game, they were playing in Division One last year and they have plenty of excellent players,” added Cassidy.
“I’m sure it will be a real stern test.”
A goal in the opening minute from Aidan Breen saw the away side take control of the contest early as he found space to rifle the ball into the top right corner of the goal.
Lorcan McStravick and Oisin Murphy added points before Bogue found the net again.
Diarmuid King hit Newtown’s opening score from the penalty spot, with Sean Mullaney and King also registering points.
Tempo kicked on in the second half as McStravick, Murphy, Bogue and Breen all tagged on scores to open the gap.
Conor Courtney landed a second Newtown goal, but Caolan Corry punched the ball into the net at the other end to hit Tempo’s ninth goal in their last three games.
While Tempo make the trip to Donagh, Newtown will hope to improve their fortunes when they face Lisnaskea in a derby match-up at home.
