Devenish 2-11 Irvinestown 2-12

Irvinestown’s young stars lifted this year’s Erne Cup Division Two title as only one point separated them and Devenish at Canon Maguire Park.

A winning mentality from the St. Molaise’s senior side this season has filtered through to the juniors as they took eight wins from their league campaign finishing three points behind top spot Devenish.

However, Irvinestown got the better of the Garrison side in Derrygonnelly as Rory Keane’s late point avenged Irvinestown’s five-point defeat when the sides met in the league back at the start of July.

After suffering defeats to Devenish in the previous two years, manager Eugene Swift was pleased to see his side come out on top this time: “Good to get a win over Devenish for they have beaten us well this last two years in finals.

"Glad for the team which is full of youth and a lot of them are pushing hard to make the senior team. Personally, I’ve worked with a lot of this team from U10 and it’s good to see the boys get their reward for three years of hard work.”

The sides were locked at 0-03 just after the 10-minute mark, with Barry Goodwin, Conor O’Hanlon and Mattie McDermott all pointing for Irvinestown while Sean Treacy, Cian O’Brien and Darren Brady all responded.

McDermott found space to push his side in front when he watched his effort sail into the net and Oisin Swift added a second goal shortly after to open up a six-point lead.

Goodwin extended the lead to leave the score at 2-06 to 0-03 as the sides headed towards the changing rooms. Devenish came out fighting in the second half as Cian O’Brien hit 1-01 in the early stages with Conall Maguire also splitting the posts.

The sides traded scores over the course of the second half as Irvinestown led by four points heading into the final few moments, but a Caolan Feely goal left just a point in it when he poked the ball home.

A Maguire free tied the game before it became a case of who could hold their nerve in injury time and it was Rory Keane who would find the winner when he lifted his head and fisted over the bar to take the win.

Oisin Swift was shown a second yellow late on, but Irvinestown held on to be crowned Division Two champions.
