Ederney 2-14 Belnaleck 3-12
Belnaleck just edged out Ederney in a true thriller at St. Joseph’s Park last Friday evening.
A late point in injury time from Mark McKenzie was the clinching score in this remarkably high-scoring affair.
Three first-half goals from McKenzie, Darragh McGurn and Conleth Hill pushed Daniel Kille’s side into a 3-06 to 0-05 lead after just 20 minutes.
Their points came from McGurn, McKenzie, Kane Connor and Bryan Owens.
Ederney replied through Paul McCusker, Chris Snow (free), Luke Harron (0-02), Pól McKervey and then Snow goaled from a penalty to signal a home revival.
Niall Maguire (0-02) and Manus Maguire pointed to leave Belnaleck 3-06 to 1-08.
This left Ederney a huge task in the second half but they whittled down the visitor's lead in a spirited display.
McGurn, Connor, Owens and McKenzie were all on target for Belnaleck but Ederney hit back with a second goal from Shay Deazley to bring them back into contention.
Paul McCusker, McKervey (0-03), Deazley and Calvin Browne pointed for Ederney as the sides were level going into injury time-before McKenzie’s later clincher.
Happy Belnaleck manager Daniel Kille said this was his team’s best display of the league.
“We had a blistering start as the scoreline would suggest and probably played our best football of the year in that period.
“But we got a bit sloppy and careless in possession and Ederney punished our mistakes and fought back.
“However we showed great character to come back from a big lead that we let slip and then go on to win the game.”
